The utilization of the unconventional hydrocarbon resources would play an important role in the future of the ever-growing world s energy consumption. The objective of this research is to use benign solvents, namely ionic liquids (ILs) as surfactants for EOR. Different types of commercially available ILs are being investigated. Different factors will be studied in order to determine the ILs that are potential candidates for the use in EOR of Emirati oil reservoirs. Ionic liquids have many advantages such as biodegradability and biocompatibility as green solvents, chemical compatibility with water, easy preparation, non-toxicity and low prices. The success of utilizing the ILs in enhancing oil recovery for Emirati reservoirs, will make the great portion of oil reserves in the UAE economically feasible.
