Hala Sharkas

Prof. Hala Sharkas is Associate Professor at the Languages and Literature Department in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. She earned her PhD in Translation Studies from the University of Portsmouth, UK in 2006. Her research interests lie mainly in specialized translation such as scientific & technical translation, medical translation and news translation.

Her research examines issues related to quality assessment, terminology translation, and strategies and techniques used in translating various specialized genres such as patient information leaflets, medical posters, popular science articles and news reports. She has been teaching both general and specialized translation courses since 2006 and has been a major participant in curriculum development and program accreditation at her department in the UAEU. She serves as external examiner for graduate students as well as a peer reviewer for many international journals.

Before joining academia, she worked as a professional translator in the public and private sectors.
