Arabic is considered the official language of the United Arab Emirates and it is characterized by being diglossic because of having Classical Arabic and the colloquial dialects. Classical Arabic is the language of the Holy Qur’an and is used in all Arab countries. It is also the official language of the United Arab Emirates, the official language of communication of government entities and the language of media. Colloquial Arabic, on the other hand, is used outside the official circles. Arabic is also one of the six official languages used in the United Nations languages.
For that reason, the Arabic Language of the Developmental Instruction Unit (DIU) of the United Arab Emirates University offers a variety of Arabic language courses to newly enrolled students aiming at developing their oral and written communication skills in classical Arabic in order to help them in their University studies, research and communication beyond the students’ university education.
The Arabic Language in DIU employs the latest techniques in teaching classical Arabic and works on developing the students’ reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. It also uses the most up-to-date technologies such as the smart board and ipads to develop those skills.
