Overview

The Geosciences Department provides students with a comprehensive and distinctive curriculum of modern theory and technical skills in a range of pure and applied geosciences fields, as a firm foundation for their future professional and research activities.

The department is adherent to the university mission to be the university of the future and to prepare graduates with ability to link and interpret today’s and future’s world and fulfill diversity demand of employers in the era of the fourth industrial revolution.

Diverse and broad specialties of the department faculty members inspire exceptional opportunities for national and international interdisciplinary researches in the geosciences and other interdisciplinary programs locally, regionally and globally.

Vision

The Department of Geosciences strives to be one of the forefront interdisciplinary research and education institutions in the United Arab Emirates and the region, through maintaining scientific integrity and ethics in research, seeking for excellent teaching, serving society and national needs, and international reputation.

Mission

The Department of Geosciences is dedicated to offer outstanding teaching curriculum in geosciences and to conduct research of high standard focusing on national and international related issues. It is our fundamental aim to produce professional geoscientists having knowledge, skills and values required to serve the needs of the society and the country.

To achieve the Department’s mission, commitments are given to:

  • Provide high-standard and internationally accepted academic programs in geosciences.
  • Prepare students with sufficient knowledge of fundamental principles and practices of geosciences.
  • Serve other educational programs in the University by the best possible means.
  • Involve students in active research projects locally and internationally.
  • Encourage, support and retain faculty and technical staff.
  • Create suitable environment and opportunities for faculty members to demonstrate and develop their skills and talent in research and teaching.
  • Enhance participation of faculty members in national and international scientific meetings and conferences.
  • Maintain and expand advanced laboratories and equipment.
  • Strengthen the relationships with national governmental and private sectors through training, courses, consultations, etc.
  • Act within international and national environmental issues concerning global climate change and environmental sustainability.

Facilities

The Department of Geosciences manages a variety of modern teaching laboratories and classrooms, including labs dedicated to structural geology, geochemistry, Hydrogeology, Petroleum geology, igneous and metamorphic petrology and crystallography, stratigraphy and paleontology, sedimentology, Geophysics, Petrophysics, Remote Sensing and GIS and physical geology.

The classrooms and labs are equipped with PC desktops or laptops and video projection systems, which have full access to the internet. The department also has an extensive collection of teaching samples and demonstrations for classroom and lab use.

The Department of Geosciences maintains five state-of-the-art units which are available to researchers both within and without the UAEU community.

  • Petroleum Geochemistry and Hydrogeochemistry Lab

The lab equipped with an ion chromatography NCSH-O, a graphite furnace, a LECO Cs 200, a Varian CP 3800 GC pyrolysis instrument, and a Soxhlet apparatus for bitumen extractions, also coupled plasma (ICP) and an atomic absorption/emission (AA/AE) spectrometer to determine total organic carbon (TOC) and bitumen content, bitumen and crude oil compositions, and oil-viscosity determination.

  • X-Ray Diffraction Unit

Using a Philips PW/1840 XRD with Ni filter and Cu-K radiation (=1.542A) for determining the chemical composition and physical nature of manufactured and natural materials.

  • Remote Sensing and GIS Lab (RSL)

The (RSL) has an extensive collection of landsat ETM-7, JERS-1, ERS-1, ERS-2, SAR-C, and Terra Aster data. The lab facilities are open to the UAEU and UAE community through teaching, research, and community workshops.

  • Geophysics and Seismic Lab

The geophysics lab has a multi channel smartseis seismograph, a STING R1 R&IP earth resistivity meter to help in the fields of environmental geophysics, engineering geophysics, earthquake monitoring and seismic Stratigraphy.

  • Museum

While the museum’ collection emphasize the Geosciences of UAE, the museum also have a large international collection of rocks, ores, minerals, gems, and fossils. The museum contains over 1200 samples, including a collection of nearly 250 fossils and 150 igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks from around the UAE. The museum available during the UAEU working days for all visitors from Universities, schools and other authorities from UAE.
