German Delegates and UAE Stakeholders at the Food Science Day

On February 16th, the Department of Food Science organized a Food Science Day activity that was attended by professors and students from Osnabrück University (Germany). The event was attended by Prof. Ghaleb Al-Hadrami (Dean Faculty of Food & Agriculture) and about 80 participants who listened to presentations from Prof. Afaf Kamal-Eldin about the Department of Food Science (UAE) and its activities, and from Prof. Ludger Figure about the study program in Food Science & Business at Osnabrück University. The long distance education program operated by UAEU and Michigan State University was presented during the meeting as well as research performed at the Department of Food Science (UAEU) on dates and camel milk. In addition, representatives from Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority (Al-Ain Branch), the Farmers Service Center (Abu Dhabi), and five food companies, viz. Al-Foah, IFFCO, Al-Khazna, Al-Islami, and Camelicious gave presentations about their institutions and companies and their activities. The aim of this activity was to strengthen the relations between the University Department and stakeholders in UAE as well as Osnabrück University in order to be able to provide a rich environment for student training in food sciences, food production, food processing & manufacturing, and food marketing. It is planned that a first group of UAEU exchange students will visit Osnabrück University in summer 2011 and that students will continue their field trips, training, and internships with partner stakeholders in UAE.
