Rising Recycle Awareness in UAE
17 January 2013
Undergraduate student Fatma Al Suwairi's paper title "Gamification of a Recycle Bin
with Emoticons" has been accepted the leading conference HRI Tokyo 2013 as a "late
breaking report" for its substantial discoveries. The paper describes how by using
sounds and social rewards we can induce people to recycle more. A prototype of the
bin is on display in CIT lobby, female side. Fatma’s role in the project has been
pivotal in designing and building the first prototypes of the emo-bin trash bin. The
approach uses the brilliant idea of exploiting ultrasonic noncontact sensors instead
of less reliable touch sensors for pet bottle detection. Jose Berengueres, Nazar Zaki
and Tony Ng are CIT faculty who cooperated with this project as well.
