Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine
Degree Program Overview
Veterinary medicine is a vital profession in the society that focusses on studying
animal health and diseases. A wide range of animal species are studied including food
producing, companion (horses and pet animals), exotic, and wildlife animals. Veterinarians
are considered the first line of defense in prevention against zoonotic diseases (diseases
that can be transmitted from animals to humans), and responsible for securing food
safety and public health.
The bachelor of veterinary medicine program is the only one of its kind in the UAE.
The program is five year long, after which, graduates will be qualified veterinarians.
The student will receive veterinary basic sciences education and intensive clinical
training sorted by animal species and specialized discipline.
Degree Program Objectives
- To enable the veterinary students to acquire knowledge, practical skills, and experience needed for a qualified veterinarian.
- To enforce evidence base veterinary medicine and problem oriented problem solving methods.
- To graduate veterinarians capable of providing superior animal health care, including disease investigation and prevention, at the individual and herd or flock level.
- To meet the growing national needs for qualified veterinarians in the public and private sectors.
Degree Program Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the program, students should be able to demonstrate the following:
- ability to provide appropriate health care for individual animals.
- ability to monitor and improve health and production at the herd or flock level.
- ability to ensure high standards of public health and food safety.
- knowledge in veterinary diseases recognition, treatment and prevention.
- knowledge in disease epidemiological investigation and veterinary research.
- ability to pursue higher academic degrees in veterinary medical sciences or other related sciences.
Admission Requirements
Admission requirement to be enrolled in the Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine program:
- Minimum of 75% on students Grade 12 Certificate or its equivalent from a science stream
- Students must successfully complete the University Foundation program.
Career Opportunities
- Private sector: To become a veterinarian who prevents disease occurrence, treat sick animals, and provide general health care for different animal species. Those include horses, camels, sheep and goats, cattle, dogs and cats, birds, and many others according to the veterinarian’s interest.
- Public sector: To be hired by the government as a veterinarian who oversees the policies and legislations that governs the export and import of live animals and animal products, responsible for meat inspection at slaughter houses, ,and controlling contagious and infectious diseases among animals.
- Pharmaceutical industry: To become a veterinary medical representative for veterinary pharmaceutical companies where marketing veterinary drugs and health products is expected.
- Higher degrees and specialization: To pursue higher post graduate degrees (MSc and PhD), or specialty training in different clinical disciplines (veterinary internal medicine, surgery, reproduction, diagnostic imaging, anesthesiology, and pathology).
