UAEU Explores Geospatial Research and Development Priorities and National Applications

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences at United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) organised a scientific workshop titled “Geospatial Research and Development: Priorities, Applications and Opportunities,” in collaboration with the UAE Space Agency, the National Space Science and Technology Center (NSSTC), Space42, and GIQ. The workshop brought together representatives from national entities, academic institutions, and private-sector companies and was held at the Business Center in the Crescent Building on the University’s campus.

The workshop highlighted the growing importance of geospatial research and the expanding role of spatial data and technologies in understanding cities and communities and supporting sustainable development. It also underscored the role of universities in advancing this field by bringing together multidisciplinary expertise and developing national talent. Combining advanced technologies with an understanding of human behaviour and community needs can contribute to research that delivers scientific value while addressing national priorities.

The workshop brought together researchers and specialists in geospatial sciences, Earth observation, satellite data, and artificial intelligence to explore ways of applying these fields to develop solutions that support decision-making across vital sectors. Participants discussed the challenges faced by national entities and explored how these challenges could be translated into practical research questions and projects, drawing on academic and government expertise as well as the technological capabilities of the private sector.

The workshop also showcased the GIQ platform, developed through a partnership between the UAE Space Agency and Space42, and its advanced data and tools that support research and the development of geospatial applications. Discussions also focused on opportunities to establish joint projects and develop national capabilities in geospatial analysis.

The workshop concluded by emphasising the importance of translating the outcomes of these discussions into joint research initiatives and applications that serve communities and support decision-makers, while further advancing geospatial research and innovation in the UAE.
