Autonomous driving, particularly level 5 autonomy is likely to be realised sooner than expected. Fagnant and Kockelman (2015) reported a cost benefit of 4000 USD/year/AV from less parking, fuel efficiency, travel time and crash aversion. Similarly, Patella et al. (2019) found electric AVs to be not only quieter but also reduce long-term GHG emissions by 60% from traffic. However, barriers remain due to technological shortcomings in communication infrastructures, concise engagement of stakeholders and lack of real-world use assessments. This research group aligns its activities with the most major activities around the world. This is supported by the connections and recent activities of the CAM group head in the area in European Union and China. The focus of research is be on: road infrastructure, vehicle architecture design and development, ITS service composition and orchestration, CCAM infrastructure design and development, solutions for enriching the AV capabilities. The group will work on the real validation platforms, as one of the objectives of the group will be productisation for OEMs, Tier 1/2 providers, and city authorities.
The research group will contribute with the solutions to future mobile networks. Solutions will serve as enablers to achieve the objectives of different domains. Service orchestration, network virtualisation, implanting intelligence for various network operations, evolution of near and far-edge concepts, etc. will be the major research topics. For smart mobile communication solutions, the research group will target network operators, service providers, city authorities, mobile equipment providers. Group will ensure active involvement in the standardisation activities.
Development of an enabler, the smart mobile communication that provides the right communication bit-pipe for different application domains of smart cities, service orchestration and network virtualisation. Realisation of real application domain of smart communication as productisation for autonomous driving, positioning UAE as a Tier 2 provider
