Development of a GIS Database System for Congestion, Accident Classification and Pedestrian Accidents

This study aims at reviewing the existing database crash reporting systems and assesses its effectiveness from the standpoint of completeness, validity of data, and usability.  The study also suggested the development of an internet-based Geographical Information System GIS for traffic management and traffic safety. The system allows the various concerned stakeholders to interact, feed data, and retrieve information.

 

The Objectives were

• Defining the goals and strategic objectives to achieve geographic information systems.
• Assessment of current state of geographic information systems in the United Arab Emirates.
• Proposing federal standards for incidents database system and necessary data in different layers of geographic information systems.
• To propose improvement suggestions to the structure of the existing database and geographic information systems and to establish a timetable and economical program for the proposals.
• A technical and economic feasibility study for the proposed improvement suggestions.

Special points of the study

• It covers the geographic information system used by various stakeholders.
• The study focuses on investigating the various gathered information, working on amending it, and organizing the process of information exchange.
• The study focuses mainly all the emirates of the country and cities whose population can reach more than 100,000 people, which can be used to predict the nature of the total areas in the United Arab Emirates.
• As for the quantitative data analyses, it will cover accident data with injuries for three years period.

The applied methodology in this study depends on several standard methods which is recognized in scientific research method and will be used to achieve qualitative and quantitative quality that meets the objectives of the study. The study methodology is summarized in:

• An extensive and in-depth study of previous related studies, with the aim of extracting and concluding pioneering experiences that have proven successful upon application.
• Conducting a field survey with specialists (from the concerned stakeholders in the country), in order to identify their impressions and develop an accurate perception of the current reality through the daily dealings of these specialists.

Main outcomes

• Main objectives were obtained and addressed.
• Propose the most effective solutions and recommendations.
