In-Depth Investigation of Severe and Fatal Motor Vehicle Crashes in Abu Dhabi
The study established a database of a representative sample (200 crashes per year) of all fatal and severe injury roadway crashes, which take place in the emirate for three years. These accidents are thoroughly investigated in order to understand the true causes and mechanisms that lead to severe injuries and fatalities due to roadway crashes.
The Objectives were to determine the type and severity of impacts to passenger and no passenger vehicles in which the road users have been either hospitalized or fatally injured in Abu Dhabi, UAE;
To evaluate the real-world performance of the structure and existing safety features of all passenger vehicles in Abu Dhabi;
- To correlate occupant injury outcomes with the above;
- To identify causes of road traffic crash injury;
- To identify factors that increase or decrease risk in motor vehicle crashes in Abu Dhabi and to envisage factors that might be modifiable through interventions;
- To provide surveillance data necessary to systematically evaluate and audit the efficiency of EMS services in Abu Dhabi.
The exact procedure used in various stages of data collection by all study members includes:
- collection of police information,
- vehicle inspection,
- site inspection,
- case logs,
- retrieval of medical information and participants interviews,
- primary nurse review and coding,
- review and SPSS coding.
