Standards and Specifications of the Traffic Safety in the UAE

This study aims at reviewing the standards and specifications of traffic safety in the United Arab Emirates.  The study presented a detailed review of some studies of traffic safety related to the topics. It also provided a summary of the statistics for traffic accidents in the country, as well as the economic implications of traffic accidents.  The study also presented a detailed proposal on the best method to determine speed limits on the roads.

The Objectives were to review traffic safety standards and specifications in the United Arab Emirates, by addressing several topics, including:

• A detailed review of some related traffic safety studies.
• Summary of traffic accident statistics in the country in the years 2005 to 2008
• Economic effects of traffic accidents and the role of traffic safety in avoiding these effects.
• The efficiency of applying or selecting speed limits as necessary on the roads, or the possibility of their conflict with the road-specific features (their type, classification, etc.). The study will also present a detailed proposal on the best way to determine speed limits for roads in the country and the methods proposed to activate them to improve traffic safety features.
• Briefly present some important basics for determining the minimum acceptance of standards and specifications for roads, as well as standards for vehicles quality tests.
• Traffic safety standards (applied and not applied) in the country.
• Recommendations to improve traffic safety and the role of different institutions in it, with a program for priorities and expected costs.

The methodology relies on several standard methods and is known by the method of scientific research, and it will be used to reach the qualitative and quantitative quality that achieves the goals of the study.

The study methodology is summarized in:

• Extensive and in-depth study of previous studies and related to the subject of the study.
• In-depth statistical analysis of the traffic accidents database.

There are many sources of information that support this study, as it initially depends on number of different literary works, including books, reports, magazines, and published and unpublished research that deals with this field. It was also mainly relied on the Internet and libraries to know everything related to the subject of this study.
