Novel Food: Developing Market Opportunities for Farmed Marine Fish and Unconventional Crops

Group Member

Wide-ranging scoping review to summarize the existing literature on unused indigenous agricultural genetic resources of the UAE. Through the marketization lens, it will examine the possibilities of novel food, animal and fish feed, and farming practices.

Identify native
Moringa peregrina, a plant native to the UAE, has edible pods and tubers that are part of the traditional diet. Could this become a mainstream food?

Exploratory data collection through focus groups to understand initial perspectives by digging deeper into the thinking, knowledge, and attitudes of the potential consumer (population) toward the novel food, feed, and farming technologies explored in other subthemes.

Consumer perceptions towards novel food
Novel food and nutraceuticals grown in bioreactors rather than a conventional farm.

Questionnaire development for wide-scale distribution using the findings from the scoping literature review and qualitative data.

Market trends and analyses
Insects or algae as food or feed: Would that be accepted by consumers in the UAE?
